The layout of your vegetable garden does not necessarily need to be completely functional but it is a good idea to at least make it look attractive. Erecting a decorative arch and perhaps a few vegetable growing structures will not only improve the overall look of your garden, it will also aid the production of more crops.

The most common type of garden structures are those that are primarily built to help plants to thrive, as well as giving them the space to climb and support the weight of the plants fruits etc.

Certain vegetables, such as peas, cucumbers, and eggplants require a lot of support. Growing these types of vegetables above ground, rather than in the soil, will produce a better crop. It will also protect them from insects located in the soil. One of the biggest advantages to growing fruit over ground is that it is less likely to rot. We all want our plants to grow taller and stronger, so support structures are well worth putting up.

When you look through an online or local garden store, you will find a wide range of garden structures to choose from. The type you choose will depend on which vegetables you plan to grow and which structures are most suited to helping them reach their full potential.

Another important factor to consider is the look of the structure. Ideally, it should enhance the look of your garden. Structures such as archways, trellises and arches can really add a magical element to your vegetable garden.

Placing a birdbath or box in the garden will also add a nice element to it, and the birds will help control pests that can harm your plants.

Stakes are another very handy means of support for your vegetables. Just make sure you fully drive the in to the ground and space them well to prevent encroaching on other plant roots.

Whichever structures you finally decide to add to your vegetable garden, don’t forget to buy the twines, jute cords, or plant ties that are necessary to tie your plants to the structures and poles.

The first thing to consider when you decide to plant a vegetable garden is how it will be laid out. The main factors that will determine the layout of your vegetable garden are what type of vegetables you intend to grow, and the available space in your garden.

Plan it out

First up, you should find out what sort of area your vegetable garden will cover. You also need to take in to consideration the suitability of this space in terms of the available light this plot will have access to, as well as the type of soil present. It is also important to allow for an adequate drainage system.

Next, comes the fun part of deciding on which type of vegetables you would like to grow. You could choose to grow just one specific type of vegetable, or opt to grow a range of different vegetables.

Draw up a list of your vegetable choices and then do a bit of research in to the requirements of each of them, namely, the amount of space and light they will need.

Decide on your garden layout

Three of the most popular layouts are rows, beds and a style known as potager.

Perhaps the most common style of layout is the rows type. This style is pretty self-explanatory as it entails planting a type of seed, or different seeds, in a row.

Plant beds differ slightly from the rows style in that they allow a better access route to your plant bed. This will prevent you from needing to trample over your bed in your boots, which would only result in you compacting the soil under your feet, resulting in soil that is harder to dig over and aerate.

The most fancy design of layout, potager, is named after the French phrase for ornamental vegetable or kitchen garden. The beauty of this style is that you are not tied to the familiar square or rectangle plant bed. Potager beds can be round, triangular or winding in shape. Again, this style of bed should prevent you from treading on the soil.

Whichever layout and vegetables you decide on, you will find vegetable gardening an enjoyable and rewarding pastime.

Growing herbs can be a frustrating business. It’s a bit like having a pet or a small child, in that they aren’t able to just tell you what they need – it’s on you to figure it out. Luckily, help is at hand! Without further ado, here are some of the best tips for growing herbs.

Drainage is the key. Whether you are growing your herbs inside in pots or outside in your garden, soil that stays wet is a big problem for herbs. For pots, put an inch layer of gravel in the bottom of them before adding your soil, and mix the soil with some compost or coarse sand to lighten it. For growing herbs outdoors, dig up the area where you want to plant them to a depth of 15-18 inches, then lay down three-inch layer of crushed rock. Again, use a lightened soil on top. A little limestone is also a good idea to ensure the soil is alkaline.

Fertilizer isn’t always necessary. Herbs don’t grow in high-quality fertilized soil in their native environments (usually the Mediterranean), and there is evidence that fertilized soil leads to herbs with more foliage but less flavor.

Ensure your herbs get full sun. Most herbs require direct sun during the day, so if you’re growing herbs outdoors ensure that they’re not going to be in the shade of a tree or your house. If you’re growing them indoors, put them on a windowsill facing the direction of the equator, and install a fluorescent ‘grow lamp’ for extra light during the winter.

Be careful with watering. Too much water can quickly kill a lot of herbs because roots will rot. To avoid this, don’t give herbs (particularly ones you keep indoors) so much water that their roots are left soggy. Try ‘watering’ them with a spray mister instead.

Pick leaves at the right time. How much flavor the leaves of your herbs have depends in part on when you pick them. For optimum flavor, pick them in the morning, after any dew has evaporated but before they’ve received a lot of direct sun. Note that you can pick herb leaves as soon as the plants are big enough that you’re not taking more than 1/3 of their foliage at a time, but take the lower and outer leaves first.

Know whether your herbs are annuals or perennials. Some herbs are annuals, meaning that they bloom for one season and then die. More herbs are perennials though, meaning that they can live through the winter and bloom again each year. Out of the popular culinary herbs, annuals include basil, dill and coriander. Perennials include fennel, chives, marjoram, tarragon, mint and thyme. Keep in mind when planting perennials that they may be around for a long time.

These are just some tips for growing herbs that I hope will be helpful.

If you are thinking about buying a greenhouse or glasshouse you should make sure you take the following features into account:

- Check that the ridge height is at least 1.7 m (5 ft 6 in), making sure that you take protruding roof ventilator openings into account.

- The amount of headroom will also depend on the height of the eaves. For a comfortable working space, these should be at least 1.35 m (4ft 6 in).

- Check that the cross bracing on aluminium alloy greenhouses is sturdy enough to make the structure rigid.

- It can be expensive to replace glass of a non-standard size such as those used in a Dutch light greenhouse, so bear this in mind when choosing a design. A standard size is 60 x 45 cm (24 x 18 in) or 60 cm (24 in) square.

- If you are going to need your greenhouse to be consistently warm over the winter, think about installing double-glazing. However, this will increase the cost significantly.

- Bear in mind that the total roof ventilation area should equal one sixth of the floor area you may need to install additional ventilators.

- Gutters and downpipes are often optional; however, they are very useful for channelling rainwater so that it may be collected and used for watering. They will also prevent rain from flowing from the roof, damaging nearby plants.

- Side ventilators are excellent for providing a through-flow of air during the summer. Make sure that these close tightly to prevent heat loss in the winter.

- Sliding or hinged doors must be at least 60 cm (24 in) wide – more if wheelchair or wheelbarrow access is required, and without a ‘lip’. Sliding doors have the advantage that they can be opened at any width to provide additional ventilation, and will not slam in wind. Make sure that any door shuts tightly and does not let in draughts.

- A kick panel at the base of the door reduces the risk of the glass panel breaking.

- When comparing prices between different greenhouse models or suppliers, bear in mind that a base may be an optional extra. The majority of timber- framed structures will need one. Some bases will come with a step, which may make wheelchair access and wheelbarrow use difficult.

- Any greenhouse that is not attached to a brick base should be secured using ground anchors.

If for example you are using your garden shed for a potting shed or garden shed then there are some things you need to add to make the gardener in your life happy. Regardless, of the use for your garden shed there are several accessories you need to add to the garden shed.

SOLAR POWERED LIGHTS ALONG THE PATH LEADING TO THE SHED – No matter what you store in your garden shed sooner or later you will find yourself needing to go the shed at night to get something you have stored in the shed. Lighting the pathway will make it much safer for you to get to the shed and to get there in a safer manner. No more tripping to get to the shed. Best of all solar powered lights come in a variety of styles to make the lighting very attractive along the pathway to your shed.

SOLAR POWERED PUMPS – If you are using a rain barrel to collect the rainfall coming off the shed you will eventually want to pump the collected rain water to some plants, shrubs, trees, or flowers. Today you can get solar powered pump kits that will allow you to pump the water to wherever you want plus you can also use the pump to pump the water into a drip irrigation system or to run a fountain. Using solar powered pumps save electricity and are the right thing for all of us to do whenever possible.

SOLAR POWERED SECURITY LIGHTS – As you approach your garden shed there is nothing better than a motion detector light coming on to light the area for you. This is a safe way to avoid tripping over garden hoses, pots etc. as you approach the shed. Even if the solar powered security light is not a motion detector type you can using get a motion detector kit to make your light a motion detector light.

HOSE REEL AND HOSE CONTAINERS – If you have landscaped around your garden shed or if you have turned your garden shed into a potting shed then you will be using water to water the plants, vines, flowers, or shrubs around or in the shed. In all likelihood you will have hoses around the garden shed and need to pick and roll those hoses up to avoid tripping and to make the area just look better. Keeping the hoses under control can be done in two ways. One, install a hose reel on the shed or sitting at the side of the shed and reel the hose in after use. The other way is for you to coil the hose up in a hose container. Either way solves the basic problem of making it safer to walk around the garden shed.

PORTABLE SINKS - For those shed builders who do not want to add plumbing to the garden shed there are a couple of ways to use portable sinks to help out the gardener. First, you can mount a portable sink on the side of the garden shed. Second you can use a portable sink that is constructed on wheels and that can be moved around. Both types of sinks are available online today and are a great way to make watering easier for the gardener in the family.

ADD A WEATHERVANE AND A RAIN GAUGE – Adding a weathervane not only adds character to your garden shed but it also provides you with an accurate wind direction reading for your micro-climate in your back yard. Add a rain gauge so you can get accurate rain amounts for your lawn and garden. You will probably already have thought of adding a thermometer but you can also add a device to give you the wind speed. I installed a complete weather station to my shed and had it transmit to a control panel in my house. I was constantly looking at the monitor for accurate information for my area. An added value to this station was that the information could be downloaded to my computer for historical weather records for my yard.

WINDOW BOXES – Add some window boxes to your garden shed to give you some additional areas to plant flowers, starter plants, and herbs. Adding a window box also beautifies the shed.

ADD PLANTER BOXES AROUND THE SHED – Not only will planter boxes allow you to beautify the area around the shed but they also give you an area to plant starter plants in the spring. You can start your seedlings in your planter box and move them into the garden shed at night if the temperatures get too cold.

Organic garden fertilizers have replaced chemical fertilizers because of they are cheap and easy to produce and are also environment friendly. These fertilizers induce nutrients in to the soil, which is then absorbed by the soil microbes to keep the soil healthy whereas, synthetic fertilizers add concentrated nutrients only for the plants. Every natural fertilizer contains the major nutrients that plants need. This includes potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen.

The following are the various types of organic garden fertilizer

Compost – Compost or humus is a mixture of decaying vegetation. The humus conditions the soil and also retains the moisture in it. It breaks up clay and adds microorganisms and nematodes that enrich soil. The humid acid in the compost releases nutrients that will help the soil to regain its lost nutrients.

Mulch – Mulch is a layer of vegetable matter placed on top of the cultivable soil. Mulches help preserve humidity and maintain temperature of the soil. Also, when the vegetables decompose, it adds more nutrients to the soil.

Composted manure – Composted manure is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The nutrient values differ for various animal and vegetable-based manures. While composting, the nitrogen content is reduced and the rest of the stable compounds are locked. During this process the temperature raises gradually, which helps in killing of weed seeds and pathogens.

Some more Organic fertilizers that you can use:

Bone meal and Cottonseed meal – Bone meal is rich in phosphorous and calcium and is often used to fertilize tomato and bulb plants. Cottonseed meal is abundant in nitrogen and is a broad-spectrum natural fertilizer.

Fish meal – Fish meal is a great source of nitrogen and phosphorous. It is added to the plants like a meal to supply the right nutrients.

Soybean meal – Soybean meal is used as a chief source of nitrogen. It is added to make the soil regain its lost nutrients.

Salts – Salts are used as magnesium, calcium, and sulfur supplement for soil and plants. It is a cheap material used for neutralizing acidic soils and to break heavy clay soils to let air and water penetrate.
